Pheasant Berry - Bare Root

Please note: this is a 1 year old bare root seedling.

The Pheasant Berry (Leycesteria Formosa) , also known as Himalayan Honeysuckle, is a striking, exotic-looking shrub that is a real eye-catcher in any garden. With its hanging flowers and edible berries, this plant offers ornamental value all year round and contributes to a lively and nature-friendly environment.

Features:

  • Flowering: The Pheasantberry flowers from July to September with hanging clusters of bell-shaped, purple-red bracts and white-pink flowers. These flowers are not only beautiful to look at, but also attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.
  • Fruits: In late summer and autumn, dark purple to black berries appear which are loved by birds, especially pheasants, from which the plant gets its name.
  • Leaves: The fresh green, heart-shaped leaves provide a soft, lush look. In autumn they get a warm glow.
  • Height: This shrub reaches a height of 1.5 to 2 meters and has a loose, airy growth habit.

Location and care:
The Leycesteria Formosa likes a spot in full sun or light shade. It grows best in humus-rich, well-drained soil and can withstand mild frosts. The Pheasant Berry is easy to maintain and can be pruned in early spring to maintain shape and encourage new growth. The berries taste like a combination of caramel and chocolate but can only be eaten when the berries are well ripe and soft to the touch.

Why choose the Pheasant Berry?

  • A perfect choice for a natural, bird-friendly garden.
  • The combination of graceful flowers and colorful berries provides months of visual splendor.
  • Requires little maintenance and is very suitable for borders or as a solitary plant.

Plant information
This 1-year-old bare-root seedling is sold in winter dormancy without leaves. Bare-root plants are always sold without leaves because the bare roots would otherwise dry out. It is best to pot the plant directly in 70% quality potting soil and 30% perlite. Place the plant in a cool, light place (greenhouse or garage with window) and avoid frost below -5°C. It is best to keep the plant in a pot with good drainage for the first year. When the plant is large enough, it can be planted out.
