Sterilize preserving jars in hot water or in the oven

You probably know the feeling: you've just made a mountain of delicious jam or finally used those perfect pickles, and you want all that effort to be worthwhile. Sterilizing your glass jars is truly your best friend. It might sound a bit complicated, but trust me—it's actually quite simple and ensures your homemade treasures retain their flavor for months. Sterilizing is an essential step in ensuring your preserves are safe to eat. Boiling prevents bacteria from spreading to the food.

Just start by gently rinsing your jars and lids thoroughly with hot water. This will remove any dust and any odors – after all, nobody wants jam with a smell of stale bread, right? For proper sterilization, simply pop them in the oven: 100°C (212°F), bake for fifteen minutes, and you're done. No oven handy? No worries! A large pot of boiling water will also do the trick – just let your jars and lids sit in it for about 5 to 10 minutes.

The most important thing after all this hassle? Just let them air dry thoroughly. I know, you're in a hurry to get your fresh jam in, but a little patience really pays off. Moisture is the enemy of long shelf life. And don't forget: a tight seal is half the battle – it's the only way to keep all your treats safe and full of flavor. When canning, you also need to leave a little space at the top of the jar for expansion.

With your freshly sterilized jars, you can get started. Whether you want to save those last few zucchini, dry herbs, or go wild with fermenting, with a little preparation, you'll be enjoying your creations all winter long. Enjoy! Don't forget to label your jars with the contents and the canning date for optimal storage.
