Xenolim is the green asparagus for hobby gardeners and food forest enthusiasts. This mid-early, tasty asparagus is loved for its high yield and ease of cultivation, also for private individuals. Green asparagus such as Xenolim are often sweeter and more aromatic thanks to the chlorophyll - and because you don't have to cover them, the harvest is extra easy!

With its beautiful, closed head and strong, vital growth, Xenolim is also an ornamental addition to your (vegetable) garden. This asparagus plant is a perennial that returns annually and can last up to 20 years, so you can enjoy fresh asparagus every season. The harvest period starts in April and runs until mid-June.

Cultivation information:

  • No harvest in the first year, so that the plant can use its energy to grow strong.
  • In the 2nd year you can harvest one asparagus stalk per plant.
  • In the 3rd year you can harvest a limited amount, for example once a week per plant.
  • From the 4th year you can harvest abundantly until mid-June.

Location and soil type: Xenolim grows easily in sunny spots and thrives in deep sandy soil or medium-heavy, loose clay.

How many plants are needed for a weekly meal per person? For a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children) 10 plants are sufficient for a harvest from April to June 21. This is 7 to 8 weeks of enjoying fresh asparagus.

Storing asparagus claws

Asparagus claws are best planted out immediately upon receipt. If you can't do it right away, store them in the refrigerator, shed or cellar at around 4ºC to prevent them from sprouting. Leave them in the bag to prevent them from drying out. They can be stored for a maximum of 7-10 days before planting them out.

Want to keep them longer? Take them out of the bag and put them in a sealed bucket with slightly moist sowing or cutting soil. Be careful: not too wet, because then they will rot. The sooner they are planted, the better! Want to know more about planting? Read our blog or watch our video .
