Vine Souvignier Gris on rootstock SO4 (Piwi - resistant)

General information about the vine variety Souvignier Gris :

One of the Freiburg Piwis is the Souvignier Gris. This cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Bronner was brought together by Norbert Becker in 1983 at the State Institute for Viticulture. From Baden to western Switzerland on Lake Constance, it is popular with winegrowers and also with winegrowers' cooperatives because of its reliable yields, good growing conditions and health. The character of the Souvignier Gris variety makes it possible to vinify it as a still wine, but also as a base wine for cuvées in the sparkling wine segment.

Grape

The grapes of the Souvignier Gris vine are medium to large, not very compact and have an elongated cylindrical shape. The medium-sized berries have a pink skin.

Wine

As a wine, the variety is comparable to a neutral to slightly fruity Pinot type. On the nose, the variety shows subtle fruit aromas of honeydew melon, candied apricot and quince juice. On the palate, a fine, fruity acidity and a delicate tannin structure stand out, which give the well-structured wines a long-lasting aftertaste.

Cultivation advice

The Souvignier Gris vines show average to good vigor. When pruning or cutting back, the lower fertility of the basal eyes should be taken into account. Stem rot can be noticeable, depending on the vintage and soil. The ripening window is similar to that of Pinot Blanc.

Preparation for planting out the Souvignier Gris vine:

Put your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This way it can suckle itself full again before planting out.

Ground preparation :

You can improve your soil with lava grit (if lime soil) or with bentonite and lava flour (if sandy soil).

Planting out a grapevine :

Make a hole with a diameter of 10 cm and +/- 30 cm deep with a ground drill or spade. And plant the vine with the graft just above the ground. The vine may come out of the ground between 5 and 10 cm. Plant your vines between May 1 and May 15 and leave 1 meter between the plants and 1.5 to 1.8 meters between the rows.
