Do you have winter leek plants in your vegetable garden? Here are some handy tips to help you keep them in tip-top shape:

Weed Free: Keep your leek plants weed free to allow them to grow without competition.

Winter hardy: Leeks are winter hardy and can be left in the ground all winter if necessary.

Soil type: Provide well-loosened, moisture-retaining soil. Leeks do not like wet feet, so good drainage is essential.

Harvesting: Use a fork or spade to harvest. This will prevent the stems from breaking.

Protection: Protect your leek against the leek fly with insect netting.

When to plant winter leek?

Timing: You can plant out winter leek plants from the beginning of June to the end of August.

Soil: Leeks are not picky about soil types, as long as they are fertile and well-drained. A sunny spot is a must.

Space: Leeks are traditionally grown in the open ground, but you can also plant a few plants in large, deep containers or raised beds.

When to harvest winter leek?

Timing: You can harvest leeks from early September to late March.

Storage: Leeks do not store very long, so only harvest what you need immediately. Leek plants can be left in the ground through the winter until you need them. Use a fork or spade to dig them up, as pulling can break the stem.
