Crosne or Japanese tubertail (Stachys affinis) in P9 pot

Crosne, also known as Japanese turnip, is a hardy, perennial root vegetable with small, graceful tubers that grow underground. The tubers are crunchy, slightly sweet, and have a nutty flavor, ideal for stir-fries, salads, or as a side dish.

Crosne is easy to grow, but to get large, juicy tubers, a little more attention is required. The site should be in full sun and have rich, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0).

Don't allow flowering if you want to harvest tubers. Instead, prune the shoots back when they are 30 cm long, cutting them back to 10 or 15 cm. The tubers begin to form in late summer. Make sure your plants get enough water. Harvest the tubers as needed only after the foliage dies back in late October or November.

Important!
These are hardy but not evergreen plants. In winter, the above-ground parts die back and the plant goes dormant. Therefore, when you receive the plant, it may sometimes seem like you're receiving an empty pot or a dead plant. This is completely normal: the plant is still alive and safely underground in its pot. Give it a spot in your garden, and in spring it will naturally sprout again from the underground parts.
