My passion for hobby wine growing in a nutshell

My passion for the hobby of wine growing

Away from wine

I will tell you briefly my story and why I am starting this website. I am Tom Deseyn, 46 years old and passionate about wine since 2010. I followed a training as an aspiring sommelier in evening classes and visit vineyards several times a year at home and abroad. You can do a lot around wine, it is geography, history, chemistry, you can maintain your languages, it is tourism, gastronomy, ... too much to mention. Wine has taken a nice place in my life but professionally I do not want to do anything with it.

Bitten by gardening

It was 2014. A pile of firewood had left a bare spot on my lawn. I tilled the soil and planted a few seedlings from the garden center. I found it fascinating to see something grow that I could eat. It gave me a lot of physical and mental satisfaction to get my hands dirty in the soil. Then there was the taste of a home-grown vegetable that really blew me away and the icing on the cake was realizing that something that grows in your garden is good for the planet. No packaging, no transportation, no chemical pesticides, no soil erosion due to pesticides, ...

Before I knew it, 2/3 of our lawn had to go. A new passion had arisen, vegetable gardening. I was able to get a piece of land in the neighborhood and started my vegetable garden there. In the meantime, I am working full-time on the website www.moestuinweetjes.com which currently has 7 employees.

The merger of two passions became a hobby of wine growing

In 2015 I was able to make the connection between my passion for wine and for the vegetable garden. From an acquaintance I was able to buy vines that were left over from a planting. I planted 21 vines, about half Pinot noir (10 vines) and half Chardonnay (11 vines). The acquaintance told me the correct planting distances which I neatly adhered to and my vineyard was born. "But what should I do now?", I thought.

I searched long and often for easily digestible information about wine making. I note everything on this website, from planning the website to clinking glasses. In addition, I provide links to good products in my webshop. From plant rods to stainless steel tanks to tools for filling bottles.

Good luck in your great adventure called wine growing.

Greetings Tom
