General information
Monarch is a red, mold-resistant grape variety bred in 1988 by Norbert Becker at the State Institute for Viticulture in Freiburg. It is a cross of Solaris × Dornfelder, with the aim of developing a powerful red wine grape with a noble character. Monarch is prized by both professional and amateur viticulturalists for its rich aroma and strong resistance.

Grape
The berries and bunches are medium-sized and turn deep reddish-blue. The grape is highly resistant to downy and powdery mildew. The bunch attachment is firm, and the berries ripen evenly. Botrytis rarely occurs, but some vigilance may be necessary in wet weather.

Wine
Monarch wine has an intense red color with aromas of strawberry, raspberry, and red berry. The palate is full-bodied and fruity, with a soft yet prominent tannin structure. It is reminiscent of Pinot Noir in style, but with a richer body. Monarch is suitable for varietal winemaking and for use in blends with other fruity red wines.

Cultivation advice
The plant grows vigorously but remains easily manageable. Monarch thrives in a sunny location with good drainage. Its good resistance makes it suitable for organic cultivation or for those who prefer minimal pest control. Ripening occurs in the second half of September.

Preparing the vine
The vine develops neatly, with few double shoots. The yield is stable, and the plant requires little intervention for healthy growth. The cluster structure makes Monarch easy to maintain, even in smaller gardens.

Ground preparation

• On calcareous soil: improve with lava grit
• On sandy soil: improve with bentonite and lava flour

Planting out
Soak your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This allows it to soak up some water before planting.

Plant between May 1st and 15th. Use a soil auger or spade to dig a planting hole 10 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep. Insert the graft just above the ground, so that the vine protrudes 5 to 10 cm above the ground.
