Muscaris vine on SO4 rootstock (Piwi - resistant)

General information about the vine variety Muscaris

The mold-resistant Solaris and the bouquet variety Muskateller were the inspiration for Muscaris, which Nobert Becker bred in 1987 at the State Institute for Viticulture in Freiburg. The idea was to breed a counterpart to Muskateller that would ripen earlier with lower acidity. In addition, the aim was to reduce susceptibility to botrytis by a loose-grained structure.

Grape

The structure of the grapes of the Muscaris vine is medium to large and, depending on the location, loose to compact. The berries are medium sized, greenish yellow and have a thick skin.

Resistance variety Muscaris

Peronospora +++ Mildew or Oidium ++ Botrytis ++

Wine

Muscaris does what the name promises. The wines show an intense muscat aroma, embedded in tropical fruit. In the mouth the abundance of aromas is compensated by a juicy body with a pleasant acidity and subtle smoky notes.

Cultivation advice

Muscaris thrives in moderate locations. In poorer locations we recommend stronger rootstocks. Because of the early shoots the variety should not be planted in locations where there is a risk of May frost. It is resistant to winter frost. In unfavourable years Muscaris tends to stem rot. The harvest maturity is approximately the same as that of Müller-Thurgau and can be used for high qualities.

Preparation for planting out Muscaris vine

Put your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This way it can suckle itself full again before planting out.

Ground preparation

You can improve your soil with lava grit (if lime soil) or with bentonite and lava flour (if sandy soil).

Planting out a grapevine

Make a hole with a diameter of 10 cm and +/- 30 cm deep with a ground drill or spade. And plant the vine with the graft just above the ground. The vine may come out of the ground between 5 and 10 cm. Plant your Muscaris vines between May 1 and May 15 and leave 1 meter between the plants and 1.5 to 1.8 meters between the rows.
