Prior is a mold-resistant red grape variety that is similar to Pinot Noir in its cultivation and ripening. It reaches harvest maturity shortly after Pinot Noir, making it suitable for temperate climates. This variety is prized for its consistent yield and wine quality, including in organic and small-scale vineyards.

Grape
The bunches are average-sized and contain dark blue, medium-sized berries. The grape is highly disease-resistant and delivers reliable quality. The flavor is neutral to fruity, making it widely applicable in blends or as a varietal wine.

Wine
Prior is considered one of the finest mid-season red varieties among resistant grapes. The wine is soft, full-bodied, and deeply colored, with high phenolic content. The nose combines ripe red fruit, spice, and a touch of complexity. The wine lends itself well to oak aging and can age exceptionally well in the bottle.

Cultivation advice
Prior is a vigorous grower with good resistance to downy and powdery mildew. Its resistance to botrytis is average. Thanks to its strong skin and airy cluster structure, the risk of rot is limited. The grape requires similar care to Pinot Noir and prefers a sheltered, well-drained location.

Preparing the vine
Growth is vigorous yet manageable, with a well-organized leaf structure. The plant produces few double shoots, making it suitable for those seeking easy maintenance without sacrificing yield or quality.

Ground preparation

• On calcareous soil: improve with lava grit
• On sandy soil: improve with bentonite and lava flour

Planting out
Soak your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This allows it to soak up some water before planting.

Plant between May 1st and 15th. Use a soil auger or spade to dig a planting hole 10 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep. Insert the graft just above the ground, so that the vine protrudes 5 to 10 cm above the ground.
