When to plant winter leeks?
Winter leeks can be planted from June to early August. Water thoroughly after planting, especially in dry weather. Leeks aren't picky about soil type, as long as it's fertile and well-drained. They prefer a sunny location. Winter leeks thrive in open ground, but can also be grown in large, deep planters or raised beds.
When to harvest leeks?
Winter leeks can be harvested from December to March. Harvest only what you need for immediate use, as leeks have a limited shelf life. Use a fork or spade when harvesting to prevent the stems from breaking.
Tips:
- Keep leek plants weed-free.
- Leeks like well-loosened, moisture-retaining soil.
- It is best to harvest with a fork or spade to avoid breaking the stems.
- Protect your leek with insect netting against leek flies.
