Hazelnut Corylus avellana 'Halle'sche Riesen' – 5 litre pot

The 'Halle'sche Riesen' is a very old variety that originally comes from Germany. It is a productive, strong-growing variety that produces large, shiny hazelnuts in the autumn and is not very susceptible to diseases and pests. Graceful yellow catkins appear in February-March, an early sign of spring. From September, the ripe nuts fall from the bush and are ready to be harvested. Delicious fresh, roasted, or used in baking.

The hazelnut is a deciduous shrub characterized by its multi-stemmed growth and flexible twigs. In the autumn, the green leaves transform into an atmospheric golden-yellow color.

What is a dwarf tree?

Dwarf means that the tree has been grafted onto a slow-growing rootstock, which allows the trees to bear fruit faster and reach a lower height. The advantages of this are that they are suitable for smaller (vegetable) gardens, allowing you to grow more varieties in the same space. It is also convenient to be able to harvest easily, safely, and without a long ladder.

Tips and care:

• Planting: plant the bushes from September to March in a sunny to partially shaded spot in nutritious, humus-rich, and well-draining soil.
• Pruning: pruning is generally not necessary; dead and broken branches can be pruned away. Hazelnuts grow on the short shoots, so leave these in place. For rejuvenation, you can remove one to two heavy branches once the plant is mature.
• Feeding: fertilize a few times per season with cow manure or organic fertilizer. Provide extra water during dry periods.
• Ground or pots: the hazelnut thrives best in open ground. It can also be grown in a large pot but will remain smaller.

TIP: Plant a second hazelnut bush nearby for a higher yield; 'Cosford' and 'Webb's Prize Cob' are excellent pollinators.
