Turmeric is planted directly outdoors in the open ground from May onwards. To grow extra thick rhizomes, you can extend the growing season by first growing the plant indoors in a pot. Plant the rhizomes whole or cut them into pieces. When doing the latter, make sure that each piece has a few buds or "eyes". These buds will later grow into shoots.

Before planting, it is essential to prepare the soil well. Turmeric thrives best in moist, well-drained soils with a neutral pH. The rootstocks (=rhizomes) are planted about 5-7 cm deep, with the buds facing upwards. It is important to keep sufficient space between the rhizomes, as the plants will spread as they grow.

Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Turmeric loves sunlight and grows best in a sunny environment. Make sure the plants get good exposure to sunlight to grow optimally.

During the growing season, leaves and flower stalks develop from the buds on the rhizomes. The plant blooms with striking white flowers. When the growing season ends, the above-ground parts die off and the curcuma rhizomes are harvested. The harvest is around October-November.
