Johanniter vine on SO4 rootstock (Piwi - resistant)

General information about the vine variety Johanniter

Johanniter is one of the best-known Piwi varieties. It is a cross combination from the year 1968 of Riesling x (Seyve-Villard 12-481 x (Ruländer x Gutedel)). The variety was dedicated to Johannes Zimmermann, at that time head of vine breeding at the Freiburg Wine Institute. It is thanks to him that the Piwi nursery was run in a forward-looking and practical way.

Grape

The grapes of the Johannitter vine are medium-sized, cylindrical and compact. The berries are medium-sized and show small dark spots on the skin.

Resistance variety Johannitter

Peronospora ++ Mildew or Oidium ++ Botrytis +++

Wine :

The wines show a soft acidity with a juicy body and medium tannin structure. The nose has subtle aromas of melon, lime and quince.

Cultivation advice :

We recommend planting in medium to good locations, which should not be at risk of late frost due to early budding. In terms of growth and appearance, the variety resembles Riesling; ripens in the same period as Pinot Blanc.

Preparation of vine variety Johanniter:

Put your Johanniter vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This way it can suckle itself full again before planting out.

Ground preparation:

You can improve your soil with lava grit (if lime soil) or with bentonite and lava flour (if sandy soil).

Planting out :

Make a hole with a diameter of 10 cm and +/- 30 cm deep with a ground drill or spade. And plant the vine with the graft just above the ground. The vine may come out of the ground between 5 and 10 cm. Plant your vines between May 1 and May 15 and leave 1 meter between the plants and 1.5 to 1.8 meters between the rows.
