Winter carrot 'Flakkée 2' BIO

Flakkée 2' is a winter carrot that can be stored well after harvest. 'Flakkée 2' forms a large crop with large, deliciously sweet roots. Only to be sown in the months of April and May. One bag is for approximately 18m2, and the planting distance is 20x5 cm.

Winter carrot 'Flakkée 2' are large orange carrots and form a large crop. The carrots are deliciously sweet and can be stored excellently after harvest.
You can only sow winter carrots in the months of April and May. Sow the seeds directly in the ground. Preferably on raised ridges. Make sure the soil is nicely loosened. The finer the soil, the better the carrot can grow straight and long. Use a row distance of 20 cm. Sow the seeds between your fingers in rows one after the other. When the plants emerge, thin them out to a planting distance of 20x5 cm. Depending on the desired root thickness, a wider or closer planting distance can also be maintained. With a wider planting distance between the carrots, the roots will grow faster and the roots will have more space to grow into thicker carrots. A smaller planting distance ensures thinner carrots.
Problems with carrot fly are best solved with insect netting; cover fairly soon after emergence. A simple framework/cage works best to keep out carrot fly.
In October and November the carrots can be harvested. Keep the carrots cool, sand prevents drying out. Don't be surprised by mice.

Saving seeds

Store seeds in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a sealed box in a cupboard. Pay attention to the expiration date on the packaging and use them before that time. If the packaging has been opened, make sure it is sealed properly and check the germination capacity before use.

You can easily test the germination capacity of seeds with a germination test :

  1. Place a few seeds (for example 10) on a damp piece of kitchen paper.
  2. Fold the paper towel closed and place it in a plastic bag or place it in a sealed container.
  3. Place it in a warm place, such as on the windowsill.
  4. After a few days, check to see if the seeds have started to germinate.
