Tips and care

• Planting: plant the gladiolus bulbs in the spring (March to May) once the risk of night frost has passed. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil and plant them approximately 10 cm deep.

• Maintenance: water regularly during growth and bud formation. Because the heavy flower stems grow quite tall, it is wise to provide light support in windy locations.

• Overwintering: because a gladiolus is not hardy, lift the bulbs from the ground in the autumn before the first frost. Let them dry and store them in a cool, frost-free place until the next season.

• Open ground or pots: looks best in groups in open ground at the back of the border, but can also thrive in large, deep terrace pots.
