The Japanese medlar (Eriobotrya japonica), also known as Loquat, is a beautiful evergreen fruit tree that is not only decorative but also produces delicious, juicy fruits. The combination of fragrant blossoms and exotic fruits makes this plant a valuable addition to any garden or patio.

  • Growth power : compact, broad-growing tree with an elegant shape.
  • Leaves : Large, leathery and dark green with a silvery underside, giving a tropical appearance.
  • Winter hardiness : tolerates cold well but protect young trees with fleece in case of severe frost. When the tree is larger it can easily tolerate temperatures of -15ºC.
  • Taste : The fruits have a unique combination of peach, citrus and mango with a slightly sweet, aromatic taste.
  • Texture : soft and juicy, with a thin, edible skin.
  • Colour : yellow-orange when ripe, with an oval shape.

The Japanese medlar flowers in autumn and early winter , and the fruits ripen in spring (April-May) . Getting fruits can be difficult, but in sheltered places it is certainly possible.
