'Gieser Wildeman' dwarf pear tree – 5-liter pot

The Gieser Wildeman is the classic variety of stewing pear and likely the tastiest. The brownish-yellow pears with a red blush turn a beautiful red when cooked and have a wonderfully rich flavor. In the spring, this tree blooms more abundantly than any other pear tree with a sea of white blossoms. The pears are ready for harvest starting mid-October and can be stored until January, perfect as winter fruit from your own garden.

A self-pollinating tree that thrives well as a dwarf or espalier tree. For an even richer harvest, plant a pollinator nearby such as 'Conference', 'Beurre Hardy', or 'Doyenne du Comice'.

What is a dwarf tree?
Dwarf means the tree is grafted onto a slow-growing rootstock, allowing the trees to bear fruit sooner and stay shorter. The advantages of this are that they are suitable for smaller (vegetable) gardens, allowing you to grow more varieties in the same space. It is also convenient that you can harvest easily, safely, and without a tall ladder.

Key features:

  • Harvest period: October (storable until January)
  • Taste: rich, full, red-cooking flesh
  • Fruit color: brownish-yellow with red blush
  • Use: stewing, compote, jam, desserts
  • Location: full sun
  • Height: 2-3 m
  • Planting distance: 2-2.5 m
  • Self-pollinating: yes (higher yield with a pollinator)
  • Flowering time: April-May
  • Height upon delivery: 70-80 cm (excluding pot)

Tips and care:

  • Planting: because the trees are delivered in pots, they can be planted year-round. Preferably plant in the autumn in a sunny spot in nutritious, well-draining soil.
  • Pruning: prune in winter or just after flowering. Trim away vertical shoots. In the early years, bend fruit-bearing branches horizontally for better fruit yield. Thin the fruits in May-June for better quality and to prevent branch breakage.
  • Feeding: fertilize in the autumn with a rich dose of organic fertilizer. With a heavy fruit load, provide an extra dose in the summer.
  • Open ground or pots: they will always grow better and produce more fruit in open ground.
  • Support: provide support in the first year with a stake and tree tie.

TIP: Store pears in a cool, dark, and dry place. They are prone to bruising; handle them with care and never stack them!
