The Rouge de Bordeaux fig tree is a prolific variety known for its delicious figs with a sweet, rich flavor and deep black-purple skin. A true eye-catcher in the garden thanks to its large, decorative lobed leaves, but it is the fruit that makes it truly special. The flesh is wine-red, juicy, and sweet—a flavor experience you won't soon forget.

This early-ripening variety is perfect for container gardening or smaller gardens and begins producing fruit as early as August. The fruits are slightly smaller than those of the well-known Brown Turkey, but all the more flavorful. A major advantage: this fig is fully self-pollinating and therefore does not require other plants to produce a rich harvest.

Rouge de Bordeaux grows best in well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny and sheltered location. The more sun it receives, the better the fruit ripens. The tree requires regular watering and annual fertilization to produce healthy, tasty fruit. In cold climates, winter protection is recommended, although the plant is reasonably hardy down to -15°C. Rouge de Bordeaux can be grown both in the garden and in a pot, making it versatile for any garden setting.

Tips and care:

• Planting: preferably plant in the spring in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. In a pot? Choose a pot with a diameter of at least 25cm with a mixture of 1/3 sand, 1/3 compost, and 1/3 potting soil.
• Pruning: prune dead branches in early spring. In the summer, lightly trim young shoots to stimulate fruit development.
• Nutrition: fertilize in early spring with cow manure pellets and give an extra dose of granular fertilizer in May for a rich harvest.
• Frost protection: the plant is reasonably hardy, but protect young plants with garden fleece during severe frost or bring them indoors.

TIP: Figs always grow better and produce more fruit in open ground than in a pot. If you still want to grow them in a pot, choose the largest one you have. The bigger, the better!
