Ortega vine on SO4 rootstock

General information about vine variety Ortega:

Ortega has its origins in the breeding work of Hans Breider, who crossed the variety with Müller-Thurgau and Siegerrebe in Alzey in 1948. He dedicated the variety to the socio-political mastermind and philosopher José Ortega y Gasset, who was active in Spain and Germany. Due to its early ripeness and mild acidity, Ortega often heralds the start of the harvest of a wine year in the more northern wine-growing regions.

Grape :

The medium-sized grapes are pyramidal, sometimes shouldered and have a loose to mixed berry structure. When ripe, the berries are golden yellow and have a thick skin.

Wine :

Ortega produces wines rich in extract with a discreet aroma of nutmeg and peach, depending on the ripeness. The mild acidity and early ripeness justify the versatile use of the variety. Suitable for fresh still wine and more complex fuller wines. Not suitable for sparkling wine.

Cultivation advice for Ortega vine :

Very early ripening variety. Its resistance to winter frost is very high, comparable to that of Riesling.

Preparation of vine variety Ortega:

Put your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This way it can suckle itself full again before planting out.

Ground preparation :

You can improve your soil with lava grit (if lime soil) or with bentonite and lava flour (if sandy soil).

Planting out a grapevine:

Make a hole with a diameter of 10 cm and +/- 30 cm deep with a ground drill or spade. And plant the vine with the graft just above the ground. The vine may come out of the ground between 5 and 10 cm. Plant your vines between May 1 and May 15 and leave 1 meter between the plants and 1.5 to 1.8 meters between the rows.
