Winter rye is a frost-resistant crop, making it particularly suitable as a green manure during the winter months. It can be sown late and provides a quick and dense ground cover with excellent root development. This effectively protects the soil against erosion and the blowing away of drift-prone soil.

After the winter, the crop reaches a height of approximately 20 to 40 cm and can be mown. The crop residues should then be incorporated (cultivated and/or plowed) to prevent regrowth. Winter rye is relatively resistant to diseases and pests and is suitable for almost all soil types, except for wet and silty fields.

Use as green manure:

  • Improving soil structure
  • Adding organic matter to the soil
  • Suppressing weeds

Sowing and planting information:

  • One bag is sufficient for approximately 8 m²

Saving seeds

Store seeds in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a sealed box in a cupboard. Pay attention to the expiration date on the packaging and use them before that time. If the packaging has been opened, make sure it is sealed properly and check the germination capacity before use.

You can easily test the germination capacity of seeds with a germination test :

  1. Place a few seeds (for example 10) on a damp piece of kitchen paper.
  2. Fold the paper towel closed and place it in a plastic bag or place it in a sealed container.
  3. Place it in a warm place, such as on the windowsill.
  4. After a few days, check to see if the seeds have started to germinate.
