The columnar cherry 'Sylvia' is one of the most popular cherry trees for small spaces. This compact, columnar cherry tree produces large, firm, dark red cherries with a wonderfully sweet and juicy flavor. In the spring, the tree is laden with a sea of white blossoms, which also makes it a real eye-catcher aesthetically. Because the fruits grow close to the trunk, the harvest is straightforward and easy.

Delicious to snack on fresh from the tree, but also excellent for use in desserts, cakes, jams, and juices. Self-pollinating, it produces a good harvest even on its own, but a second sweet cherry tree nearby increases the yield.

What is a columnar fruit tree?

A columnar fruit tree is a special type of fruit tree that has been bred to have a compact, vertical growth habit, similar to a column. This makes them particularly suitable for smaller gardens, patios, or even balconies where space is limited. Instead of growing into a wide tree, a columnar fruit tree grows in a tight, upright shape, allowing you to grow more fruit in a smaller area.

Tips and care:

• Planting: because the trees are supplied in pots, they can be planted all year round. Preferably plant in a sunny spot in nutritious, well-draining soil.
• Pruning: requires very little pruning. If necessary, trim side branches in summer to 10-15 cm from the main trunk to maintain the tight columnar shape.
• Nutrition: provide a moderate amount of organic fertilizer for fruit trees in the spring.
• Open ground or pots: very suitable for large pots on a patio or balcony, but it will bear even more fruit in open ground.
• Support: provide support with a stake for the first few years to prevent it from blowing over.

TIP: Protect the ripening cherries from birds in July by stretching a net over the narrow column—thanks to the tight shape, this is incredibly easy!
