Runner bean 'Neckarkönigin' BIO

The pole bean 'Neckarkönigin', known as the bacon bean, is suitable for cultivation in the greenhouse and also outdoors. In that case, a sheltered place is preferred. This variety produces long and very fleshy pods. One bag is for approximately 20m2, and the planting distance is 75x15 cm.

Pole bean 'Neckarkönigin' – also known as bacon bean – has long (approx. 20 cm), very fleshy pods, which remain tender for a very long time. Preferably grow the bean in a sheltered place. 75 grams is sufficient for approximately 30 sticks. Advice: before sowing, prick the seeds slightly with a needle. This promotes the absorption of moisture and gives a better emergence.

The harvest of pole beans starts somewhat later than of bush beans. Important advantages of pole beans: no problems with mold (crop can dry out well), long harvest period and high yield. All pole beans have a wonderful way of climbing; whether it is slanted, straight or twisted, always winding and always with right turns, the way up is found blindly.

It does not matter what support material you use (bamboo poles, bean poles, ropes, etc.) but the whole must be sufficiently stable when fully loaded. In every allotment you can find someone who wants to explain what the 'best' system is. An old guideline, but still current, is to keep 8 to 10 plants per m². Sowing twice (mid-May and end of June) gives a good harvest distribution.

In greenhouse cultivation, you can also let the beans climb up a rope; for example, you attach the rope to a horizontally pulled steel wire. This saves building a construction of sticks. Pole bean cultivation in the greenhouse generally gives extra yield.

Saving seeds

Store seeds in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a sealed box in a cupboard. Pay attention to the expiration date on the packaging and use them before that time. If the packaging has been opened, make sure it is sealed properly and check the germination capacity before use.

You can easily test the germination capacity of seeds with a germination test :

  1. Place a few seeds (for example 10) on a damp piece of kitchen paper.
  2. Fold the paper towel closed and place it in a plastic bag or place it in a sealed container.
  3. Place it in a warm place, such as on the windowsill.
  4. After a few days, check to see if the seeds have started to germinate.
