Winter rye - Green manure BIO

Winter rye is a frost-resistant crop that is excellently suited as a green manure. This crop can still be sown between August and October and has good rooting and ground cover. One bag is for approximately 8m2, and the planting distance is 20x2 cm.

Winter rye is a very suitable green manure that can be sown late (August to October). This green manure is not sensitive to frost, provides fast and good ground cover and very good rooting. It keeps the soil covered during the winter, is effective against erosion and effective in fixing drift-sensitive soil. After the winter, the crop is 20 to 40 cm high and can be mowed. The crop residues should be incorporated (by means of milling and/or ploughing) to prevent regrowth.
Little susceptible to disease and pests. Suitable for all soil types, but has difficulty with wet and silty plots.

Saving seeds

Store seeds in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a sealed box in a cupboard. Pay attention to the expiration date on the packaging and use them before that time. If the packaging has been opened, make sure it is sealed properly and check the germination capacity before use.

You can easily test the germination capacity of seeds with a germination test :

  1. Place a few seeds (for example 10) on a damp piece of kitchen paper.
  2. Fold the paper towel closed and place it in a plastic bag or place it in a sealed container.
  3. Place it in a warm place, such as on the windowsill.
  4. After a few days, check to see if the seeds have started to germinate.
