Sowing peas is one of those chores that calms you down. Hands in the soil, making a row, seeds in, watering – and then the waiting begins. But when you see those first pea pods a few weeks later, you'll remember why you started.
Growing your own peas isn't complicated. They don't ask for much, give you a quick return, and fit in nicely with the other plants in your garden. Children often enjoy helping, especially when they're harvesting. And let's be honest: they taste best fresh from your own garden.
Low or high peas?
At Plukkers, you'll find seeds for both short and tall varieties. Which one you choose depends on your available space and what you find practical.
low-growing peas
These stay nicely low and grow vigorously without extra support. Easy to grow, and perfect for smaller gardens or containers. Simply sow them, and they'll find their way up on their own.
tall peas
These plants grow a bit longer and need a trellis or some brushwood to hold onto. Harvesting is easier, and the plants stay dry longer after a rain shower. This makes them somewhat stronger.
When can you sow peas?
You can get started between January and early May. Early sower? Then start indoors or under glass. From March onwards, you can also sow them directly outdoors. We like to sow them in small batches at a time – a row every two weeks. This way, you spread out the harvest and can enjoy it longer.
Tips for sowing
- Don't sow too wet: peas don't like soaking wet soil
- When sowing early, it is best to use trays or pots, for example deep-root trays
- In the open ground: sow about 3 to 4 cm deep and leave some space between the rows
- Choose a sunny spot, then they will grow best
Once you have a few plants established, you'll notice how easily they thrive. You don't need to do much. Just provide occasional support and, most importantly, harvest as soon as the pods are full.
Why choose pea seeds from Plukkers?
Our seeds are organic and carefully selected for their vigour and flavour. You'll find clear information in every packet, and we're happy to help if you have any questions. We don't try to make things more complicated than they need to be – gardening is meant to be enjoyed.
And as always at Plukkers, we choose varieties that suit the amateur gardener. Whether you have plenty of space or just a few pots on your patio, you can get started.
