Chokeberry (Aronia prunifolia 'Viking') - 2 liter pot

Chokeberry is a deciduous shrub that blooms in late spring with cream-colored flowers that develop into small, pea-sized, purple-black berries. The berries are ideal for making jam, jelly, wine, syrup, or apple juice. With their newfound superfood status, chokeberries are gaining popularity again. In autumn, the leaves turn from green to purplish-red and then fall off.

Key Features:

  • Thorns: no
  • Location: sun to partial shade
  • Planting distance: 100-150 cm
  • Harvest: August - September
  • Height without pruning: 1.5 - 2 m

Tips and care:

  • Planting: September to March (not during severe frost), after that date is also possible, but keep in mind that you'll need to provide extra water in warm weather as the roots aren't yet well established. It grows as a shrub and therefore doesn't require support.
  • Pruning : Should be pruned in the fall. The plants don't require much pruning, especially not in the first few years. However, if the plant becomes too large or yields decline, some pruning may be necessary.
  • Open ground or pots: You can grow all soft fruit in pots; the larger the pot, the better they will do. They will always grow better and produce more fruit in the open ground.
