Celeriac 'Monarch' BIO
Celeriac 'Monarch' is a variety with a relatively large and fibrous tuber. The foliage of the 'Monarch' is long and dark green. The ideal location is in the sun-half shade and the planting distance is 50x40 cm.
Celeriac 'Monarch' is a traditional, high-quality, open-pollinated variety that has proven itself over many years with both hobby and organic growers. Monarch develops long, dark green foliage. The large and heavy creamy white tubers are easy to clean and are beautifully white and rich in fibre on the inside. The mildly aromatic tubers are perfect for the fresh market, but the good shelf life also makes it an ideal storage variety.
Celeriac can be grown well on almost all soils, although good moisture management and drainage are important. Sufficient moisture is important for regular growth. Irregular growth with growth explosions can cause rot. Tubers from loam and clay soils are best stored. Tubers from sand and peat soils are less well stored.
If the tubers are stored just above freezing point for a few days after harvest, this makes them even milder in taste. Note: not only the tuber but also the stems are very tasty, e.g. for in soup, pasta sauce or pea soup.
For early outdoor cultivation, sowing can be done from mid-February. However, then it must be sown at high temperatures, 15 degrees or more, otherwise the plants will shoot (form flower stalks). In a cold greenhouse or tunnel, sowing can be done from the second week of March.

Saving seeds
Saving seeds
Store seeds in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a sealed box in a cupboard. Pay attention to the expiration date on the packaging and use them before that time. If the packaging has been opened, make sure it is sealed properly and check the germination capacity before use.
You can easily test the germination capacity of seeds with a germination test :
- Place a few seeds (for example 10) on a damp piece of kitchen paper.
- Fold the paper towel closed and place it in a plastic bag or place it in a sealed container.
- Place it in a warm place, such as on the windowsill.
- After a few days, check to see if the seeds have started to germinate.
