Sainte-Marthe

La ferme de Sainte Marthe: a pioneer in organic seeds
The history of La Ferme de Sainte Marthe goes back to 1974, when Philippe Desbrosses took over the family farm in Loir-et-Cher. He started a unique collection of vegetable seeds that meet the standards of organic farming. This marked the beginning of a mission to cherish biodiversity and promote ecological gardening.

In 1986, the first catalogue was published with about fifty varieties specifically for amateur gardeners. This was expanded in the nineties to over a hundred varieties, included in the official French catalogue for amateur gardeners. The preservation and selection of traditional seeds have been at the heart of the farm's activities ever since.

Since 2006, the farm has been located in Brain-sur-l'Authion, in Anjou, a region known as the seed valley of France. Under the leadership of Dominique Velé and Arnaud Darsonval, La Ferme de Sainte Marthe has become a leading producer and supplier of organic seeds. With over 1,000 varieties in their range, two-thirds of which are produced on the farm, they actively contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and sustainable farming methods.

Sustainable Agriculture on 11 hectares
The farm’s 11 hectares, including 4,000 m² of tunnel cultivation and 1 hectare of open field cultivation, grow a wide range of crops. In 2023, over 200 varieties were grown, with a crop rotation in autumn and winter. These varieties are reproducible, meaning that gardeners can harvest the seeds and sow them again the following year.

A philosophy of working with nature
At La Ferme de Sainte Marthe, respect for nature is central. By constantly evaluating and improving their agricultural practices, they consciously choose traditional varieties that are essential for biodiversity and flavour preservation. They want to preserve not only the plant wealth, but also the unique flavours and nutritional values that are essential in the kitchen.

With their extensive knowledge and dedication, they ensure that every seed contributes to a healthier planet and a richer palette of plant-based flavors.

Different types of seeds

What is the difference between organic, F1 hybrid, heirloom (open-pollinated), GMO, pill and conventional seeds? We explain it to you in this blog !

Saving seeds

Store seeds in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a sealed box in a cupboard. Pay attention to the expiration date on the packaging and use them before that time. If the packaging has been opened, make sure it is sealed properly and check the germination capacity before use.

You can easily test the germination capacity of seeds with a germination test :

  1. Place a few seeds (for example 10) on a damp piece of kitchen paper.
  2. Fold the paper towel closed and place it in a plastic bag or place it in a sealed container.
  3. Place it in a warm place, such as on the windowsill.
  4. After a few days, check to see if the seeds have started to germinate.
