Professional cultivation
De Bolster pumpkins are developed for organic arable farming. Our trailing types are remarkably uniform in size and shelf life. This plant type has the property that the plot quickly grows dense, which suppresses weeds. Our 'bush' types are particularly productive and offer the possibility to control weeds mechanically for a longer period.

Sowing
Sow pumpkin seeds on the firm, moist soil layer. This is usually at a depth of 3-5 cm. For optimal germination, it is important that the soil at sowing depth has a temperature of at least 18°C at the time of sowing and the following week. Too cold or too wet soil slows down the germination process, allowing fungi and bacteria to attack the germinating seeds. Above 22°C, germination proceeds very quickly, which means that these plant pathogens have less chance to strike.

Harvest and storage

Once the fruit stalk starts to cork and the leaves start to die, the fruits are ready to harvest. For the best storage life, it is advisable to harvest the fruits as soon as possible after the first signs of ripening to prevent any sunburn damage. After harvest, the fruits can best be stored at a temperature between 8°C and 12°C. It is important to continue to ventilate the pumpkins well during storage.

Saving seeds

Store seeds in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a sealed box in a cupboard. Pay attention to the expiration date on the packaging and use them before that time. If the packaging has been opened, make sure it is sealed properly and check the germination capacity before use.

You can easily test the germination capacity of seeds with a germination test :

  1. Place a few seeds (for example 10) on a damp piece of kitchen paper.
  2. Fold the paper towel closed and place it in a plastic bag or place it in a sealed container.
  3. Place it in a warm place, such as on the windowsill.
  4. After a few days, check to see if the seeds have started to germinate.
