General information
Sauvitage is a modern, resistant variety that was approved in Germany in 2020. The grape combines genetic material from Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Riesling with resistance genes from Asian vines (Vitis amurensis) and American varieties such as Seyve Villard 12-481. Despite its young status, Sauvitage is already planted in many German wine regions—and increasingly by amateur gardeners.
Grape
The bunches are loose and bear small to medium-sized berries. Thanks to its genetic background, the plant is highly resistant to disease and cold. The loose bunch structure helps keep botrytis at bay, even in wet weather.
Resistance
- Peronospora (downy mildew): ++ to +++
- Oidium (powdery mildew): +++
- Botrytis (gray mold): ++
- Frost resistance: very good
Wine
Sauvitage produces fresh, fruity white wines with aromas of gooseberry, citrus, and white flowers. The flavor is reminiscent of a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Riesling: elegant, lively, and modern. This wine is popular as a summer wine or in light blends.
Cultivation advice
The plant grows upright and orderly, with few double shoots. Due to its loose clusters and heavy skin formation, botrytis is rare. It is highly resistant to powdery mildew, and frost poses little risk—ideal for northern regions and gardeners without chemical pesticides.
Preparing the vine
The plant grows vigorously and compactly, with undisturbed branching. Its genetic makeup minimizes disease risk, simplifying maintenance. The yield is consistent, with good-quality grapes.
Ground preparation
- On calcareous soil: improve with lava grit
- On sandy soil: improve with bentonite and lava flour
Planting out
Soak your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This allows it to soak up some water before planting.
Plant between May 1st and 15th. Use a soil auger or spade to dig a planting hole 10 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep. Insert the graft just above the ground, so that the vine protrudes 5 to 10 cm above the ground.
Planting distance
- In line: 1 meter
- Between rows: 1.5 to 1.8 meters
