General information
Weissburgunder, also known as Pinot Blanc, is a white grape variety from the Burgundy family and is grown worldwide. Germany has the largest cultivated area, particularly in Rhineland-Palatinate. Pinot Blanc is known for its high yield, soft aromas, and versatility in wine styles—from fresh to oak-aged.

Grape
The grape bunches are medium to large, cylindrical, and usually densely packed. The berries are yellow-green, juicy, and have a subtle aroma. Pinot Blanc blooms regularly and has medium to vigorous growth, with few axillary shoots.

Resistance

  • Peronospora (downy mildew): ±
  • Oidium (powdery mildew): ±
  • Botrytis (gray mold): ±

Wine
Pinot Blanc wines are softly aromatic, with fresh notes of apple, pear, and sometimes a hint of almond. The flavor is rich in extract, full-bodied, and smooth. Its neutral character makes it suitable for oak aging and for making a variety of wine styles—from light and refreshing to full-bodied and creamy.

Cultivation advice
Weissburgunder thrives in calcareous and deep soils. The grape vine sprouts early, making protection from late spring frosts essential. It has moderate site requirements but benefits from a consistent water supply. Its wood maturity is stable, contributing to its good winter hardiness.

Preparing the vine
The growth is balanced and easily managed. The yield is stable with limited foliage growth. Pinot Blanc is suitable for both small gardens and larger vineyards.

Ground preparation

  • On calcareous soil: improve with lava grit
  • On sandy soil: improve with bentonite and lava flour

Planting out
Soak your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This allows it to soak up some water before planting.

Plant between May 1st and 15th. Use a soil auger or spade to dig a planting hole 10 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep. Insert the graft just above the ground, so that the vine protrudes 5 to 10 cm above the ground.

Planting distance

  • In line: 1 meter
  • Between rows: 1.5 to 1.8 meters
