The Poncirus trifoliata, also known as the hardy orange or trifoliate orange, is a unique citrus species that stands out for its extreme hardiness, thorny branches, and decorative fruits. This plant is ideal as an ornamental shrub, a hedge, or as a rootstock for other citrus varieties.

  • Vigor: compact, heavily branched shrub or small tree with a whimsical growth habit.
  • Leaves: unique trifoliate leaves that turn a beautiful yellow in autumn.
  • Thorns: long, sharp thorns make the plant excellently suited as a natural security hedge.
  • Hardiness: can withstand temperatures down to -18°C, one of the most cold-resistant citrus species. Often used as rootstock for other species.
  • Taste: the fruits are small, yellow, and highly aromatic, but extremely sour and slightly bitter.
  • Usage: not suitable for fresh consumption, but suitable for marmalades, syrups, or as a flavoring in liqueurs.
