Gardening with children gives them life lessons that no school desk can match.
They learn about nature, working together, structured work and respect, and so much more.
But it doesn't always go smoothly. There are a few points of attention that I would like to share with you. Hopefully my tips will help you on your way to vegetable gardening with your children, grandchildren or students.
I have been gardening with my children since they were very small. I will illustrate my tips with a fun sowing session I recently had with my daughters, Sam (5) and Ela (6). And believe me, that is not always self-evident!
Their attention span is short, their motor skills are still developing, and they are often impulsive – which can sometimes lead to unexpected situations.
Get all the vegetable garden equipment ready as much as possible
Do you want to make gardening with children a success and enjoy it yourself? Make sure that everything is ready in advance. That way you can fully focus on guiding the little 'Pluckers'.
Do you have to fetch water in between? Then there is a big chance that they will get distracted and lose interest in the vegetable garden activity. Or worse… they will build sand castles with your sowing and cutting soil!
I always have a list in my head when I sow. Below I share products that I automatically think of. I also store them as close together as possible, so that I never miss.
