General information about Pinot Blanc vine variety :
Weissburgunder is cultivated worldwide and especially in Europe under the synonym “Pinot blanc”. The largest cultivation area is in Germany with around 3,500 ha. Around two thirds of this is in Rhineland-Palatinate alone.
Grape :
Within the Burgundy family, Pinot Blanc is one of the high-yielding varieties thanks to its good flowering behaviour. Growth is medium to vigorous, with little formation of axillary shoots. The typical bunch of grapes is medium to large, cylindrical and usually dense. The yellow-green berries are juicy, show a discreet aroma and ripen medium to late.
Wine :
The wines are discreetly fragrant with a fine fruity note of apple and pear, rich in extract and full of flavour. Pinot Blanc is also suitable for maturing in wooden barrels. This makes it possible to produce wines with a great variety of characters.
Cultivation advice for Pinot Blanc vines :
The variety has moderate demands on the location, whereby a good and even water supply is an advantage. It has a stable wood maturity and therefore a moderate winter hardiness. However, it tends to sprout early, so places with a risk of late frost should be avoided. This variety is very suitable for calcareous and deep soils.
Preparation of the Pinot Blanc vine:
Put your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This way it can suckle itself full again before planting out.
Ground preparation :
You can improve your soil with lava grit (if lime soil) or with bentonite and lava flour (if sandy soil).
Planting out a grapevine :
Make a hole with a diameter of 10 cm and +/- 30 cm deep with a ground drill or spade. And plant the vine with the graft just above the ground. The vine may come out of the ground between 5 and 10 cm. Plant your vines between May 1 and May 15 and leave 1 meter between the plants and 1.5 to 1.8 meters between the rows.
