Runner bean 'Emergo' is a strong and productive crop with white flowers and very long, thick and dark green pods. The crop is very robust and suffers little from wind damage. Regular and timely picking is important! If the pods have become too thick, you can still eat the unripe seeds. Due to the strong growth, sow only 2 to 3 seeds per stick; maintain a wide distance (80 x 80 cm) between the sticks (let it grow along the sticks/support). The crop is very robust and suffers little from wind damage and is therefore often used as wind protection. Fresh snow peas, garden peas and capuchin beans are the flavour enhancers of the vegetable garden. Problems with diseases and pests are hardly there and that makes it all the more attractive to grow these crops yourself. You can suffice with little fertilizer. Two main groups can be distinguished: short with a length of up to approx. 70 cm (stem) and long types (rice types). The stem varieties can in principle be grown without support, but cultivation along (short) wire mesh or with brushwood also has advantages here: picking is considerably easier and there are no pods on the ground. The rice types must in any case be grown along wire mesh. When growing along wire mesh, a row can be sown on both sides of the mesh. For all capuchins, peas and pods, early sowing (March/April) produces the best results; sowing in May and later produces insufficient pod setting and problems with mildew.

Saving seeds

Store seeds in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a sealed box in a cupboard. Pay attention to the expiration date on the packaging and use them before that time. If the packaging has been opened, make sure it is sealed properly and check the germination capacity before use.

You can easily test the germination capacity of seeds with a germination test :

  1. Place a few seeds (for example 10) on a damp piece of kitchen paper.
  2. Fold the paper towel closed and place it in a plastic bag or place it in a sealed container.
  3. Place it in a warm place, such as on the windowsill.
  4. After a few days, check to see if the seeds have started to germinate.
