Acolon vine on Gravesac rootstock

General information about the vine variety Acolon :

In Weinsberg, Württemberg, researchers Schleip and Hill succeeded in crossing Lemberger and Dornfelder at the State Institute for Education and Research for Viticulture. The result, Acolon, has the color depth and early ripeness of Dornfelder, as well as the fruit characteristics and tannin structure of Lemberger. In the cultivation areas of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, around 480 ha are planted with this variety. Due to its growth parameters, Acolon complements the classic grape varieties as a cuvée partner.

Grape :

The relatively large grapes of the Acolon vine are predominantly loose-grained. Due to the thin skin of the berries, the grapes can be damaged by wasps and birds.

Wine :

Due to the early ripeness, the wines often show high must weight and extract content, as well as excellent depth of color. This makes the Acolon vine a versatile cuvée partner in the red wine sector.

Growing advice for Acolon vine :

Acolon does not have any special requirements for the locations. Due to the increasingly earlier autumn, the strong growth and the associated risk of rot, preference should be given to later, well-ventilated locations.

Preparation of vine variety Acolon:

Put your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This way it can suckle itself full again before planting out.

Ground preparation :

You can improve your soil with lava grit (if lime soil) or with bentonite and lava flour (if sandy soil).

Planting out a grapevine:

Make a hole with a diameter of 10 cm and +/- 30 cm deep with a ground drill or spade. And plant the vine with the graft just above the ground. The vine may come out of the ground between 5 and 10 cm. Plant your vines between May 1 and May 15 and leave 1 meter between the plants and 1.5 to 1.8 meters between the rows.
