General information
Helios is a relatively new, resistant grape variety, developed at the Freiburg Institute of Wine (Germany). The variety is known for its pink berries, excellent disease resistance, and dual function as both a wine and table grape. Its vigorous growth, good yield, and Muscat aroma make Helios an excellent choice for organic gardens, pergolas, or small vineyards.
Grape
The pink berries are large (up to 15 grams each) and grow on loose, airy bunches that—with proper care—can weigh up to 1.5 kg. The flavor is sweet, with a distinctive and lingering nutmeg aftertaste. Helios is also very popular as a fresh table grape.
Resistance
- Peronospora (downy mildew): +++
- Oidium (powdery mildew): +++
- Botrytis (gray mold): ++
- Grape aphid and other rot: very little susceptible
Wine
Helios wine is fruity, with a light bouquet and a distinctive character. While this grape is also excellent as a table grape, it also produces a fresh, light white wine—ideal for those who appreciate a wine with personality and soft Muscat notes.
Cultivation advice
Its location requirements are similar to those of Pinot Blanc: preferably a sunny spot sheltered from strong winds. Helios has an upright growth habit and remains very healthy, even without chemical crop protection. Its good resistance makes it suitable for less experienced gardeners.
Preparing the vine
Growth is vigorous yet manageable, with regular branching and few double shoots. Helios produces consistent yields and is suitable for both grape enthusiasts and winemakers.
Ground preparation
- On calcareous soil: improve with lava grit
- On sandy soil: improve with bentonite and lava flour
Planting out
Soak your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This allows it to soak up some water before planting.
Plant between May 1st and 15th. Use a soil auger or spade to dig a planting hole 10 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep. Insert the graft just above the ground, so that the vine protrudes 5 to 10 cm above the ground.
Planting distance
- In line: 1 meter
- Between rows: 1.5 to 1.8 meters
