General information about the vine variety Phoenix:

The grape variety is cultivated both as a table grape and as a wine grape in vineyards. At the Institute for Vine Breeding of the South Palatinate in Geilweilerhof, the classic vine Bacchus was crossed with the fungus-resistant interspecific variety “Villard Blanc” to create the fungus-tolerant Phönix. The high resistance to classic fungal diseases explains the popularity of the variety, which is also often planted as a table grape in the vegetable garden.

Grape :

Grapes of vine Phoenix show elongated compact bunches, with small round berries of green-yellow color. The ripeness for consumption is reached from the beginning of September.

Resistance variety Phoenix :

Peronospora ++ Mildew or Oidium ++ Botrytis +

Wine :

As wine develops, the Phoenix variety shows a fresh acidity with a juicy body. Aromatically it is close to Bacchus and shows an elegant spiciness through subtle nutmeg nuances.

Cultivation advice :

Abundant rainfall after a long dry period in September/October promotes the tendency of individual berries to burst, which can lead to foci of Botrytis infection. The variety prefers dry sites with good aeration on light soils.

Preparation of vine variety Phoenix:

Put your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This way it can suckle itself full again before planting out.

Ground preparation :

You can improve your soil with lava grit (if lime soil) or with bentonite and lava flour (if sandy soil).

Planting out :

Make a hole with a diameter of 10 cm and +/- 30 cm deep with a ground drill or spade. And plant the vine with the graft just above the ground. The vine may come out of the ground between 5 and 10 cm. Plant your vines between May 1 and May 15 and leave 1 meter between the plants and 1.5 to 1.8 meters between the rows.
