Buy vegetable garden plants
How do we organize ordering plants?
The most frequently asked question about vegetable garden plants is "When will plant X, Y or Z come in". Plants are a consequence of nature and therefore not programmable, but in the article below you will get some guidelines about when our plants will be in stock .
The annual vegetable garden plants
Plukkers tries to provide you with as many vegetable garden plants as possible during the season. This does have a few challenges.
The plants in small pressed blocks are always organic plants with us and during the winter already reserved at the grower for the season that comes, that has to be the case otherwise you can not buy BIO vegetable garden plants from the growers. It is a real balancing act how many plants we are going to need.
Sometimes it is also a matter of waiting to see how big the plants will be when we receive them. If the plants are too big, we can no longer send them quickly and if the plants are too small, it can seem a bit strange to our customers. In that case, it is best to let the plants grow for another week or two before planting them out.
The annual vegetable garden plants in pots such as herb plants or tomato plants are also organically grown and we can usually get them more quickly. Herb plants can take a beating but the strawberry plants, tomato plants, cucumber plants, courgette plants or pumpkin plants are more fragile. If such a plant does not come out of transport unscathed, you can report this via our damage form where you can also upload photos. In case of damage, we compensate plants with a discount code for the amount of the plants that no longer have a chance to grow.
Planting small fruit
By soft fruit we mean fruit that grows on a bush rather than on a tree. Raspberry plants, tayberry, mulberry plants, currants, Japanese wineberry, blackberries, kiwis or kiwi berries, ... etc. can always be planted if the soil is accessible. In the summer you do have to make sure that you keep the soil sufficiently moist. We try to be able to offer soft fruit all year round. We buy as much organic soft fruit as possible. Only if a type is really not available in organic we still buy non-organic plants. Fortunately, they are in the minority.
Fruit trees and nut trees
It's a bit of a nitpick, but a nut tree is not a fruit tree. I didn't know that either :) Just like with soft fruit, we offer as many organically grown fruit trees as possible. We also have them as long as possible throughout the season. The best-selling fruit trees are:
- Fig tree Red Bordeaux
- Walnut tree
- Apple tree Elstar
- Pear Tree Conference
- Peach tree Rubira
- Plum tree Mirabelle patio tree
- Chestnut tree
- Cherry tree Grosse Schwarze Knorpelkirsche
- Apple tree Jonagold
- Plum tree Reine Claude
How are the plants shipped?
There is no uniform packaging for packing vegetable garden plants. For example, we send the press blocks in blisters (a plastic packaging made from recycled material) of 5 plants. Plants in pots, often size P9, also go in special blisters that are the size of the pots. Soft fruit, which is often in oblong 2-litre pots, also leaves in a special blister. You can sort the blisters as PMD.
Low trunk fruit trees and nut trees , which are often in a larger 5 litre pot, are shipped with the pot wrapped in foil so that as much of the soil as possible remains in the pot.
There may be some soil in the box. So open your ordered package of plants in a place where you can easily sweep or clean.
If plants are damaged during transport, please report it via our damage form where you can also upload photos. In case of damage, we will compensate plants with a discount code for the amount of the plants that no longer have a chance to grow.
Why buy plants for your vegetable garden online
We at Plukkers very often choose to sow or cut our own vegetable garden plants. But there are many situations in which we choose to buy vegetable garden plants.
Buying vegetable plants if I can't find the seeds or cuttings
I buy vegetable garden plants when I want a special variety of which I can't immediately find the seed or cutting material. An example of this are the kalette plants. They are also sometimes called kale sprouts. They are really delicious and the seeds (which we now also have) are not always easy to find.
Buying vegetable garden plants when I forget something again
I sometimes forget to sow certain vegetable plants or make cuttings. Or I see a variety that I can't resist. Winter leek plants, for example, sometimes fall by the wayside because I don't always think about them early in the year.
Buying plants for a small vegetable garden
People also order plants for a small vegetable garden on a balcony or terrace. If you only have a few pots or containers, it may not be interesting to set up a space with trays, propagators, grow lights, ... to sow and grow your own plants.
Because you can never have enough plants
Growing plants myself until harvest and a dish on my plate is in my nature. I am busy with it every day. Often it is irresistible to order pink sweet potato plants, for example.
