Buy vegetable garden plants
How do we organize ordering plants?
The most frequently asked question about vegetable garden plants is "When will plant X, Y, or Z arrive?" Plants are a result of nature and therefore not programmable, but the article below provides some guidelines about when our plants will be in stock .
The annual vegetable garden plants
Plukkers tries to provide you with as many vegetable garden plants as possible during the season. This does present a few challenges, though.
The plants in small pressed cubes are always organic plants, and we've already reserved them from the grower during the winter for the coming season. It has to be that way, otherwise you can't buy organic vegetable garden plants from the growers. It's a real balancing act to figure out how many plants we'll need.
Sometimes it's a matter of waiting to see how big the plants will be when we receive them. If the plants are too big, we can't ship them quickly, and if they're too small, it can seem a bit strange to our customers. In that case, it's best to let the plants grow for another week or two before planting them out.
Annual potted plants, such as herbs and tomatoes, are also organically grown and are usually easier to obtain. Herbs can withstand a few knocks, but strawberry , tomato, cucumber, zucchini, or pumpkin plants are more fragile. If a plant like this doesn't emerge from transport undamaged, you can report it using our damage form , where you can also upload photos. In the event of damage, we will compensate plants with a discount code equal to the amount of the plants that no longer have a chance to grow.
Soft fruit plants
By soft fruit, we mean fruit that grows on a bush rather than a tree. Raspberry plants, tayberries, mulberries, currants, Japanese wineberries, blackberries, kiwis, kiwi berries, etc., can be planted whenever the soil is accessible. In summer, however, you do need to ensure the soil remains sufficiently moist. We try to offer soft fruit year-round. We buy as much organic soft fruit as possible. Only if a variety is truly unavailable in organic form do we buy non-organic plants. Fortunately, those are in the minority.
Fruit trees and nut trees
It's a bit of a nitpick, but a nut tree isn't a fruit tree. I didn't know that either :) Just like with soft fruit, we offer as many organically grown fruit trees as possible. We also have them available as long as possible throughout the season. Our best-selling fruit trees are:
- Fig tree Red de Bordeaux
- Walnut tree
- Apple tree Elstar
- Pear Tree Conference
- Peach tree Rubira
- Plum tree Mirabelle patio tree
- Chestnut tree
- Cherry tree Grosse Schwarze Knorpelkirsche
- Jonagold apple tree
- Plum tree Reine Claude
How are the plants shipped?
There's no standard packaging for vegetable garden plants. For example, we ship press cubes in blister packs (plastic packaging made from recycled material) containing 5 plants. Plants in pots, often size P9, also go in special blister packs sized to the pots. Soft fruit, often in oblong 2-liter pots, also leaves in a special blister pack. The blister packs can be sorted as PMD (PMD).
Low-stemmed fruit trees and nut trees , often in a larger 5-liter pot, are shipped with the pot wrapped in foil to keep as much of the soil as possible inside the pot.
Some soil may get into the box. So, open your plant package in a place where you can easily sweep or clean it.
If any plants are damaged during transport, please report it via our damage form , where you can also upload photos. In the event of damage, we will compensate you with a discount code equal to the amount of the plants that no longer have a chance to grow.
Why buy plants for your vegetable garden online?
At Plukkers, we often choose to sow or propagate our own vegetable garden plants. But there are plenty of situations where we choose to buy vegetable garden plants.
Buying vegetable plants if I can't find the seeds or cuttings
I buy vegetable garden plants when I want a special variety and I can't immediately find seeds or cuttings. Kale plants are an example. They're also sometimes called kale sprouts. They're truly delicious, and the seeds (which we now have) aren't always easy to find.
Buying vegetable garden plants when I've forgotten something again
I sometimes forget to sow certain vegetables or take cuttings. Or I see a variety I can't resist. Winter leeks, for example, sometimes fall by the wayside because I don't always think about them early in the year.
Buying plants for a small vegetable garden
People also order plants for a small vegetable garden on a balcony or patio. If you only have a few pots or containers, it might not be worthwhile to set up a space with trays, propagators, grow lights, etc., to sow seeds and grow your own plants.
Because you can never have enough plants
Growing my own plants to harvest and a meal on my plate is in my nature. I'm involved with it every day. It's often irresistible to order things like pink sweet potato plants.
